Saturday 24 January – Barberton, Mpumalanga – The battle is fierce for the first leg of the 2009 MTN National Marathon Series. The cyclists pour their blood, sweat and tears into this race. If they left anything else on the track, they’d go home naked!
In the men’s competition, Team DCM Chrome’s Max Knox finished the race in first place, ahead of his teammates Jacques Janse van Rensburg and Brandon Stewart. However, Stewart was disqualified due to a (ahem) incident with Kevin Evans, which actually lead Evans to crash.
On a disappointing note, Burry Stander was forced to retire due to a knee injury and we weren’t treated to the epic battle between him and Evans
In the women’s event, Cycle Lab Supercycling Toyota’s Yolande de Villiers made a remarkable comeback to the world of cycling following her surgery and finished in first place, ahead of Ischen Stopforth and Chrissie Viljoen.
So after a successful event this weekend, we can look forward to some more ‘dirty’ fun at the Dirt Festival on Saturday 1 February at Northern Farms.
You better be there or else
