Toyota Supercycling

A while ago we posted a blog on the Toyota MTN Bike Park Event, and this past weekend, the grand spectacle finally took place. Doubling up as the 5th round of the 2009 Central Gauteng Provincial Series, the Toyota Supercycling event proved to be an unbelievable inaugural showpiece for the new purpose-built facility.

DCM Chrome’s Bryce Munro dominated on Sunday when he cruised to a significant overall victory in the Elite and Under-23 Men’s category. A worthy mention must go to current African Elite Men’s cross-country champ, Specialized’s Ben Melt Swanepoel, who finished second and Jan Withaar in third.

In the women’s category, IMC Momentum’s Yolande Speedy proved to be in her own league as she wiped the floor with all competitors. Second place went to Claudia von Tutschek and the final podium place was claimed by Carien van Jaarsveld.

Overall, it was an awesome event which should bring some new excitement to the concrete jungle, known as Sandton. And seriously, who would’ve thought that Bryanston could actually have a MTB track?!

Stunning babe *grin*

MTN National MTB Cup Series

Fountains Reserve in Pretoria was exceptionally jubilant on Saturday when Namibian Marc Bassingthwaighte, of team Garmin Adidas, secured victory in round 5 of the MTN National Mountain Bike Cross-Country Series, sponsored by MiWay Insurance.

The win also ensured that Bassingthwaighte claimed the Series title after a hard-fought season. Clap, clap! Well done Marc!

The Under-23 series title had already been wrapped up by the great Burry Stander (Mr Price Specialized) following his four wins in the previous stages, despite Garmin Adidas’ Philip Buys claiming the victory in round 5.

In the women’s race, IMC Momentum’s Yolande Speedy picked up the win, but it wasn’t enough to dethrone Jeep’s Sara Muhl, who secured her Series title with a second place finish at round 5. Well done Sara! Clap, clap!

A big clap, clap is in order for all those who competed in the Series. The competition was intense this year and many categories went right down to the last race. Awesome season and cycling, fellow MTBers!

Speedy Gonzalez

The oddly named Yolande Speedy of IMC Racing Momentum overcame all challengers to grab the gold at the MTN National Cross-country mountain bike championships in George on Saturday.

yourockThe Beijing Olympian notched up an impressive victory over her nearest competitor Erica Green, who was participating in this event as a warm-up to the ABSA Cape Epic. This victory also handed Speedy the national Elite women’s title.

However, I think that it’s pretty freaking impressive that the 38-year-old Erica Green is still performing at such a high level and I’m definitely curious to see what she does at the Epic in April.

Nonetheless, let’s not take anything away from Speedy Gonzalez – she did a pretty impressive job finishing the race with a time of 1:48:46. So take your sombreros off and salute the new champion. Eepa eepa eepa undulay undulay! She no Slowpoke Rodriquez :)
